In 1739 London engraver, John Carwitham, published twenty-four plates which showed various designs for floorcloths and other floor decoration. These were geometric layouts using squares, diamonds, hexagons and octagons in various arrangements. Some were flat two-dimensional patterns, while others produced complicated three-dimensional effects. Most of these designs showed the use of marbling or other textures, most commonly used to replicate expensive stone or parquet floors. Even now, these designs are wonderful when used with antiques, or if painted using today’s color palette, look great with all kinds of contemporary furnishings.
